Day Camp Questions We Get Asked Most

The logistics questions that actually decide whether a camp works for your family — bus routes, lunch, scheduling, and more.

Logistics & Scheduling

Can I find camps with door-to-door bus service?

Yes — use the 🚌 Door-to-Door Bus filter in our camp directory to shortlist camps that offer bus transportation, and check the Logistics section of any camp's review for the specific routes and towns it serves.

Do any camps include lunch?

Many do. Use the 🥪 Hot Lunch filter in our directory, or check the "Logistics, Transportation & Catering" section on a camp's review page, which notes whether lunch is included, catered, or bring-your-own.

What about extended day or early drop-off?

It varies camp to camp. Each review lists the camp's standard hours; many camps also offer paid extended-day or early drop-off add-ons that aren't always advertised up front, so it's worth asking directly if your schedule needs it.

Can I enroll week-to-week, or do I need to commit to the full summer?

Most camps we review offer flexible, week-to-week enrollment rather than requiring a full-summer commitment — we list each camp's session length and tuition structure on its review page so you can see exactly how it breaks down.

Do camps run in August, or just June and July?

Session length varies a lot by camp — some run a single 8-week season, others offer shorter blocks that include August. Check the session length listed on each camp's review before you plan around a specific month.

Camp Types & Age Groups

Are there camps for toddlers and preschoolers?

Yes — our Early Childhood & Little Campers category covers programs built specifically for preschool and kindergarten-age kids, with shorter days and smaller groups than a traditional day camp.

What about teens — do any camps offer CIT (counselor-in-training) programs?

Many traditional day camps in the area run CIT tracks for rising high schoolers, though the structure and age cutoffs vary a lot by camp. When a camp we've reviewed runs one, we mention it in the Staffing & Supervision section of that review — it's also worth asking the camp directly, since CIT programs aren't always listed on a camp's own website.

Do any camps accommodate kids with special needs or sensory sensitivities?

We don't maintain a separate special-needs directory, but we note staff training and inclusion practices where a camp discusses them in our Staffing & Supervision section. If this is a priority, we'd recommend calling the camp directly to ask about their specific accommodations — email us and we're happy to point you toward camps known for strong inclusion support.

What's the difference between your camp categories?

We group camps into eight specialties — Traditional & Multi-Sport, Lakeside & Waterfront, STEM Robotics & Coding, Fine Arts Pottery & Theater, Early Childhood & Little Campers, Equestrian & Farm Ecology, Sailing & Marine Ecology, and Educator-Led Heritage — based on what a camp's program actually centers on, not just its marketing. Each category has its own page listing every camp we've reviewed in it.

About Our Reviews

Are the day camps you review licensed and accredited?

Every day camp in Connecticut and New York has to be licensed through its local health department, regardless of whether it also pursues accreditation. Some camps go further and earn American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation, a more rigorous, voluntary review of staffing and health & safety practices. We flag ACA-accredited camps with a tag on their review page.

Do you cover both Fairfield County, CT and Westchester County, NY?

Yes. We review camps across both counties and keep a dedicated page for every town we cover, from Greenwich and Westport to Scarsdale and Rye, so you can see just the camps near you.

How is the Mom Score calculated?

Every camp is scored across five pillars: website transparency, aquatics and water safety, staffing and ratios, campus and facilities, and logistics. The Mom Score is the average of those five category scores, not a marketing rating. The full breakdown is on our Review Methodology page.

Is The Camp Edit sponsored by any of the camps you review?

No. We're an independent, unsponsored directory — camps don't pay for placement or for a better score. The one exception we're upfront about is The Bulldog Farm, which we've ranked #1 for eight years running on its own merits, not because of any relationship with it.

How do I submit a camp for review, or ask about a specific one?

Email info@campedit.com — we read every message ourselves. Camp directors can submit a camp for review, and parents can ask us for more detail on tuition, availability, or logistics for any camp in the directory.
